Dogs used to Hunt Lions
Dogs are one of the few animals on earth that can hunt lions. Domestic dogs are known to occasionally attack and kill outdoor cats or smaller dogs.
Dogs were used by humans until around ten thousand years ago when they became domesticated. Dogs have been used in hunting since ancient times with evidence of people using them for hunting dates back to about 18,000 years ago.
The use of dogs to hunt lions is an ancient practice that has been banned in most countries. In the past, dogs have been used as a way to track and eventually kill a lion legally.
In the early days, one of the most popular hunting tools was a pack of dogs with a long leash attached to a handler on foot or horseback. Nowadays, some hunters still use this technique for tracking and chasing big game through dense bush.
In some cases, leashes were used as traps that would hold the lion in place while hunters moved in for the kill with spears or bow and arrows. In other cases, leashes were attached to custom-made poles that enabled hunters on horseback to leap from their horses onto the back of lions that had been lured into attacking them by dogs.

A lion can be killed by a pack of dogs.
The dogs would attack the lion’s stomach and pull upwards in an attempt to tear out its throat and cut off its windpipe.
The dog would then hold the lion down in case it tried to get up, while other dogs continued to bite it until it eventually died.
The use of dogs to hunt lions is not new. It has been in use for hundreds of years.
In the past, African natives would set out on hunting expeditions with packs of ferocious hunting dogs and a spear or two looking for an elephant, lion or other prey.
They would stalk their prey until the animal’s momentary lapse in vigilance gave them the chance to attack and kill it.
This method was highly effective and it only required one person to run with the pack while another person carried their spears.
Dogs have been used in lion hunting for centuries.
Lions are one of the most difficult animals to hunt on foot because they are fast and powerful. They kill a lot of animals by biting their throat or stomach. To avoid this, hunters would use dogs to hunt lions by going for their legs and making them fall down. This strategy was also used to protect livestock from being attacked by lions because it worked on the same principle as a shepherd drives his sheep into a pen.
Although today it is illegal or otherwise impractical, some countries still practice lion hunting using dogs. It is typically done with packs of ten or more specially-bred African Hunting Dogs that work together in groups to corner, chase and bring down a lion with speed and endurance unheard of in any other canine species on earth.
